The only duct we test is the run above a cooktop, taking grease and steam out through a soffit or a roof. That is kitchen ventilation. It does not become heating or cooling work, and we do not take it there.

What does the first visit cost?
A flat $80 diagnostic. That covers the trip, the time to pull the appliance where it needs pulling, and the diagnosis itself. If you approve the repair, the $80 is credited toward it. You get a written estimate before anything is opened up or ordered, so nothing on the invoice is a surprise.
Is it worth calling someone out for a fault this small?
Usually, and the $80 answers that for you. A great many of the complaints we are called to turn out to be a cap seated at an angle, an arm resting on a bag of frozen food, or a drain with a shard of glass in it — corrected on the visit, with nothing ordered. The visit that finds nothing wrong is the cheapest information about the appliance you will buy all year.
Will you quote the repair over the telephone?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who will. The same complaint can be four different parts at four different prices, and a figure given before the appliance has been looked at is either a guess or a hook. What we will do on the telephone is tell you which band of the price table the job is likely to live in, and say plainly that it is a band and not a quote.
